Short answer: on July 1, 2025, Delta Utilities took over Entergy's gas distribution business in the Baton Rouge area. Your furnace still works the same; the gas utility name and some contact numbers changed.

What changed

Entergy sold its Louisiana gas distribution business; Delta Utilities is the gas distribution company for former Entergy gas customers in the Baton Rouge area as of July 1, 2025 (Delta Utilities, Entergy, Gas Distribution Business Sale). Electric service is a separate matter — many homes still receive electricity from Entergy while gas comes from Delta.

What to do as a furnace owner

  • Use the utility name on your current gas bill for account questions.
  • Know how to shut off gas at the meter if you ever smell gas at home.
  • For a gas smell: leave the building, then call 911 and the gas utility emergency line from outside. Delta publishes emergency contact information on its site (Delta Utilities).
  • Heating equipment repair remains an HVAC contractor job; the utility does not service your furnace heat exchanger or thermostat.

Heat pumps vs gas furnaces

Some Baton Rouge homeowners switch to heat pumps at replacement time; others keep gas heat. That choice belongs in a replacement quote, not a utility transfer. See heat pumps and furnace and heating repair.

  • Furnace & Heating Repair: Gas furnaces in attics and closets, electric heat strips and heat pumps that will not heat.
  • Heat Pumps: Heat pump repair and replacement, dual-fuel systems, defrost and backup heat questions.
  • Emergency AC Repair: No cooling during a heat advisory, water through the ceiling, burning smells and post-storm problems.

Common HVAC questions

Did my furnace need to be replaced because of Delta?

No. The utility change was about who delivers gas, not about your equipment.

Who do I call for a gas leak?

Leave first, then call 911 and the gas utility emergency number from outside. Do not turn electrical switches on or off if you smell gas.

Who repairs a furnace that will not light?

An HVAC technician. The utility handles the meter and distribution; the furnace is private equipment.
