AC Maintenance & HVAC Tune-Ups in Baton Rouge, LA

Most summer breakdowns in Baton Rouge start as a weak capacitor, a dirty coil or a slow drain line. A spring tune-up finds them while it is still cool enough to wait. Request a free quote and we'll call you back.

Two checks a year

ENERGY STAR recommends a pre-season check of the cooling system in spring and the heating system in fall (ENERGY STAR, HVAC Maintenance Checklist). In Baton Rouge, the spring visit matters most: the AC is about to run hard for five or six months. The fall visit matters for gas furnaces in particular, for safety.

Spring AC tune-up checklist

  • Measure refrigerant pressures and temperatures (superheat or subcooling), and look for oil stains that signal leaks.
  • Clean the outdoor coil; inspect the indoor coil.
  • Test capacitors and the contactor; tighten electrical connections.
  • Check fan and blower motors and belts or bearings.
  • Flush the condensate line, check both drain pans, and test the float switch.
  • Measure the temperature drop across the coil and check airflow.
  • Check the thermostat and its settings.
  • Replace the filter.

Fall heating check

  • Gas furnaces: burners, igniter, flame sensor, heat exchanger inspection, venting and draft, gas pressure, and carbon monoxide testing.
  • Heat pumps: reversing valve, defrost controls, backup heat.
  • Heat strips: elements, sequencers and limits.

Homeowner maintenance

Filters

Check monthly from May through September. Many homes need a new 1-inch filter every one to three months; thicker media filters last longer.

The drain line

Find the PVC cleanout tee near the indoor unit and pour in a cup of white vinegar every month or two during cooling season. Make sure the outside end of the line is not buried or blocked.

The outdoor unit

Keep two feet of clearance around it. With the power off at the disconnect, rinse the coil gently with a hose; never use a pressure washer. Point mower discharge away from it.

Watch the humidity

An inexpensive hygrometer tells you whether the system is drying the house. The EPA's target is below 60 percent (EPA, A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home). If indoor humidity creeps up with the AC running, something is wrong.

Frequently asked questions

When should I get my AC serviced in Baton Rouge?

In early spring, before the heat sets in. A fall check of the heating side, especially a gas furnace, is also a good idea.

How often should I change my AC filter?

Check monthly in summer. Most 1-inch filters need replacing every one to three months.

How do I clean my condensate line?

Pour a cup of white vinegar into the cleanout tee near the indoor unit every month or two in summer.

Does my furnace need maintenance if I barely use it?

Yes. Attic furnaces rust in humid summers, and a gas furnace should be checked for safe combustion and venting.

What does a tune-up actually prevent?

It catches weak capacitors, dirty coils, slow drains and low refrigerant, the usual causes of summer breakdowns.
