The city

Denham Springs is a city in Livingston Parish just east of Baton Rouge across the Amite River, with 9,286 residents at the 2020 census and the parish's largest concentration of homes and businesses. It has gone by the names Amite Springs and Hill's Springs, and its Antique Village draws visitors to the old downtown.

The 2016 flood and HVAC

In August 2016, the Amite River reached record levels and local reports at the time estimated that around 90 percent of homes and buildings in Denham Springs took on water (WBRZ, August 2016 flood coverage). Outdoor units, furnaces and air handlers in garages and closets, and ducts under floors and in walls were ruined across town. Most were replaced in 2016 and 2017, many in a rush, by whoever was available.

What that means now:

  • A wave of aging systems: equipment installed in 2016–2017 is about ten years old. Capacitors, motors and coils start failing around now.
  • Rushed installs: if your system has never felt right, it is worth checking the sizing, refrigerant charge, drain setup and duct connections.
  • Reused equipment or ducts: anything that was in floodwater and reused should be inspected; contaminated ductwork can cause lingering musty smells.

Flood-smart choices at replacement time

  • Raise the outdoor unit on a stand where floodplain rules and the site allow.
  • Keep the furnace or air handler in the attic instead of a garage or ground-floor closet.
  • Add surge protection.

Tell us your address, when the system was installed and what it is doing, and we'll call you back.
