How Baton Rouge homes heat
- Gas furnaces are common in Baton Rouge, usually in the attic or a hall closet with the AC coil on top. Inside the city, natural gas is delivered by Delta Utilities, which took over Entergy's gas business in 2025 (Delta Utilities).
- Heat pumps heat efficiently through most of a south Louisiana winter, with heat strips for backup. See heat pumps.
- Electric heat strips in an air handler are simple but expensive to run for long.
January brings average lows around 40°F under NWS normals (National Weather Service New Orleans/Baton Rouge, 1991–2020 Climate Normals), with several freezing nights most winters, so heating systems here run in short bursts and sit idle the rest of the year.
Common furnace problems
It will not light
Modern furnaces go through a sequence: the inducer fan starts, a pressure switch confirms the vent is clear, the igniter glows, the gas valve opens and a flame sensor confirms the flame. After a long idle season, the usual culprits are a dirty flame sensor (the furnace lights, then shuts off in a few seconds), a cracked hot surface igniter, or a pressure switch problem from a blocked condensate or vent line.
It short-cycles
A furnace that runs a minute or two and shuts off may be overheating from a dirty filter or blocked return, tripping its limit switch.
Burning smell
Dust on the heat exchanger burns off the first time the heat runs each year. A faint dusty smell that clears quickly is normal. Electrical burning, smoke, or any smell of gas is not.
Attic furnaces and humidity
Furnaces in Baton Rouge attics spend summer in hot, humid air with the AC coil sweating on top of them. Rust on burners, the heat exchanger and the cabinet bottom is common. That is one reason an annual heating check matters even here.
Heat strips and heat pumps
Heat strips can fail at the element, sequencer or limit switch, and they draw enough current to trip breakers when something is wrong. A heat pump that blows cool air in heat mode may have a reversing valve or defrost problem, or may be low on refrigerant.
Carbon monoxide and gas safety
- If you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 and your gas utility from outside. Delta Utilities' emergency number is 1-833-DELTA-99 (1-833-335-8299).
- Any home with gas appliances or an attached garage should have carbon monoxide alarms near bedrooms.
- A cracked heat exchanger can leak combustion gases into the airstream. Annual inspection of gas furnaces is part of the ENERGY STAR maintenance checklist (ENERGY STAR, HVAC Maintenance Checklist).
- Never use a gas oven, grill or generator to heat the house.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my furnace start and then shut off after a few seconds?
Most often a dirty flame sensor. The furnace lights but cannot confirm the flame, so it shuts the gas off.
Is a burning smell normal when I first turn on the heat?
A faint dusty smell that clears quickly is normal. Electrical burning, smoke or gas is not; turn it off.
Who do I call about a gas leak in Baton Rouge?
Leave the house and call 911 and your gas utility. Delta Utilities serves much of Baton Rouge: 1-833-DELTA-99.
Do I need a carbon monoxide detector?
Yes, if you have any gas appliances or an attached garage. Put alarms near sleeping areas.
Should my furnace be checked even though I barely use it?
Yes. Attic furnaces rust in humid summers, and problems surface on the first cold day.
