Keep people safe first

Heat and humidity together make it hard for the body to cool itself. If the AC goes out:

  • Close blinds and curtains, keep doors shut, and run fans.
  • Drink water and avoid heavy activity.
  • Get older adults, babies, people with medical conditions and pets to a cooler place: family, a neighbor, a library or store, or a cooling center if the parish has opened them.
  • Call 911 for signs of heat stroke such as confusion, fainting, or hot skin with a very high temperature.

Then protect the system

  1. Outdoor unit humming, fan not spinning? Turn the system off at the thermostat. The compressor can overheat.
  2. Ice on the lines? Turn cooling off and run the fan until it thaws.
  3. Water coming through the ceiling? Turn the system off, catch the water, and if it is safe to reach the attic unit, see whether the drain pan is full. Do not step between ceiling joists.
  4. Burning or electrical smell? Turn it off at the thermostat and breaker. If there is smoke, get out and call 911.
  5. Smell gas? Leave and call 911 and your gas utility from outside. For Delta Utilities, 1-833-DELTA-99 (Delta Utilities).

Quick checks that sometimes restore cooling

  • Thermostat on cool, set below room temperature, with working batteries.
  • A clean filter.
  • Breakers for the indoor and outdoor units, and the outdoor disconnect.
  • A tripped float switch from a full drain pan. Clearing the drain line may get you running again.

After storms and outages

Power restoration after a hurricane or severe storm can bring surges and brownouts that damage compressors and control boards. Ready.gov suggests unplugging appliances during outages to avoid surge damage (Ready.gov, Power Outages); for central AC, leaving it off at the thermostat until power is stable has a similar effect. Entergy posts outage maps and restoration estimates (Entergy, Outages). If the outdoor unit or an indoor furnace or air handler was in floodwater, do not run it until it has been inspected. See the flood guide.

When you send the form

Choose "Urgent: no cooling in extreme heat," and tell us what the system is doing, roughly how old it is, and whether anyone at home is at higher risk from heat. We'll call you back to talk through next steps. We can't promise an arrival time, so take care of people and equipment first.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do first if my AC dies in a heat advisory?

Keep people cool: close blinds, run fans, drink water, and move vulnerable people somewhere air-conditioned. Then check the thermostat, filter and breakers.

Should I keep running an AC that is not cooling?

No, especially if the outdoor fan is not turning or the lines are iced. Turn it off to protect the compressor.

My AC is leaking through the ceiling. What do I do?

Turn the system off, catch the water, and have the condensate drain cleared. Do not let a wet ceiling sit.

Can I run my AC after a flood?

Not until it has been inspected. Floodwater damages electrical components and motors.

Is no AC in July an emergency?

It can be, especially for older adults, infants and people with health conditions. Get them somewhere cool first.
